I would like to do a clean install of XP-home. I'm
having problems with my DSL modem and it appears that
registry is courupt and I don't want to to try to fix the
registry. I just want to do a clean install. How do I
do this? Do I just smiply put the dixk in and pick full
installtion?

Thanks,
Phil

*Warning - you will lose all data*

Boot to the xp cd and follow the on-screen instructions. The cd is bootable
and has all the tools to format and install.

Or,

Boot to a win9x floppy boot disk, run Fdisk, delete partitions, create new
partitions, reboot to boot disk again, run format, (or reboot to xp cd,
format, install xp). Get boot disk here: www.bootdisk.com

Phil,

Backup your data and try the Clean Installation procedure mentioned here:

Hi, Phil.

Clean install is best - unless you have applications that would take time
and effort to reinstall and/or data that you haven't backed up. In that
case, you could do an "in-place upgrade"; this would take as long as a clean
install of WinXP itself, but would preserve those apps and data.

For full instructions, see:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

After either a clean install or an in-place upgrade, make sure your firewall
and antivirus software are working, then visit Windows Update as soon as you
get back online to be sure you have all the fixes, like the one from last
July that protects you from the Blaster worm.

You do it after booting the XP CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the
license agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where,
hit ESC; select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one
to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

Than k you all for your help. I have one question. I notice that there are
two partition one for Fat 32 and other for data. Which one do I delete?

FAT 32 is the type of file system. That is *probably* your C: drive,
which is the one you need to delete, but check the name by going to All
Programs a- Accessories - Command Prompt and giving
VOL C:

It is also almost certainly the first of the two partitions in the list.
