"Classic" Win2k style Explorer in Vista.

Not sure if it's just me that HATES the new way Explorer works in Vista.
I even disliked XP's dumbed down approach. Is there a way to get the
classic Explorer back, along with the classic search?

I really hope there is....

No. I hate the new Explorer as well. It's pretty, but slow and clunky.
You might want to look at some Explorer alternatives. I was trying
Xplorer2 when I had Vista installed.

You can get some classic things back though.
Classic window design in desktop theme properties
Classic start menu in start menu properties
Classic explorer windows in control panel - ie icons tiled.

Sorry if this is not what you were after, I am not sure what the classic
win2k look is

I'm not sure how Explorer is that much different from the old one, unless
I'm smoking something here. If you go the the Start Menu and navigate to
the "Accessories" folder and launch "Windows Explorer" it works pretty much
the same as the old Explorer that's been around for some time. The main
thing missing is the file bar (which I never used anyway). You can click on
the "Organize" button and go to "folder and search options" and select "use
windows classic folders" if you want.

I like the fact that there is a "favorite links" box at the top left hand
corner and I just put the folders I use the most in there and I can get to
everything alot faster. Other than that and some eye candy I can't really
tell much else has changed.

In a word, UGLY.

In 2 words, SIMPLE, FUNCTIONAL.

A good example of where things have gone horibly wrong in Vista, is the
search, how complicated is it!! I find it really confusing, and I am what
I would call computer literate. On the other hand, you have the Classic
Win2k search, simple effective.

I agree with you completely. I'm still not sure how to do a search in a
particular location with Vista and the the Explorer interface is hard to get
used to. There are some things about it that have promise, however, such as
being able to click in the address bar to whatever level you want to go to.

If you've got file indexing turned on (which I strongly recommend) you
can find files rather quickly just by using the search box on the
(Start) Menu.

I was close to uninstalling Vista and going back to my "backed-up XP" until
I decided to give Agent Ransack a try. This freeware search application still
seems to work fine in Vista and even offers advantages over XP search, e.g.,
clicking on a file in the found filelist shows the lines and line numbers of
the found pattern. Of course, the filelist still allows for explorer
context-menu options for openning the files. The website is here:

Of course, I'm still hoping that Microsoft fixes this major flaw in Vista
but this program allows to to continue on with my beta testing of Vista.

Lastly, use at your own risk.

Well the look is completely different, thanks to Aero. It looks quite
nice, imho. Better than the toyish look of XP and certainly better than
anything before that.

That us my single most favorite thing about Vista's Explorer. An idea
that's long overdue. OSX has it, KDE has it and GNOME has it (and they
all have for years).

I think yes. B. Rogers, it's the same as with IE7 - pressing ALT brings it
up.
