Hi

Right click the Start button and select Properties. You can find out from
the resulting screen mode your system is running in.

I should have asked "Is there a way programatically of working out if a
screen is running with a classic or windows xp style desktop?"

The path in the Value Data here...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Plus!\Themes\Current

I.e. %SystemRoot%\resources\Themes\Windows Classic.theme
