xp desktop style gone

Ok, I've tried everything what I found here, browsed through all
these(and similar) ''No Windows XP Style Appearance'' topics ,and
tried all of suggested solutions, read most of kellyscorner and
downloaded stuff- but still no xp style for my windows and buttons.

My start menu is ''shaped'' in xp style, but start icon is not, also ,
all windows and buttons are in classical style.
When I click on desktop >properties>themes>windows xp....it just changes
my desktop picture, but the rest of it stays the same, when I click
desktop >properties>appearance> ....there is no windows xp style. And
now no classical style too. Desktop >properties>appearance>windows and
buttons is grayed out.

p.s.One question-should this box be checked, when I run
services.msc ,under Themes>properties>log on>allow service to interact
with desktop?does this has to do with it?

Please, is there solution, I really want my xp style back.
Thanx in advance.

Hi Anamarija,

Themes must be checked in Services and started. The Startup Type must be
set to Automatic.

Now if you do all this and you don't get your Theme back, short of
reformat and reinstall Windows XP, go to:

http://www.tune-up.com and download and install a 30-day Trial copy of
TuneUp Utilities 2007. Repair your Themes with this program. Real easy to
use.

This registry key is what disables the "Windows and buttons" style control

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Value Name: NoVisualStyleChoice
Value Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Windows and buttons Enabled
1= Windows and buttons Disabled

This fixes the Windows and buttons

Read the instructions at the top.

visualstylefix.reg is the file that you want.

If the Windows XP Style choice isn't available...
Visual styles are implemented by the Themes service. If the service isn't
running, Windows reverts to the classic Windows styles, which doesn't rely
on the Themes service.

To restore the Windows XP styles.
Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Themes | Set to Automatic under Startup
type | Click the Start button | When Themes starts, close Services

This can also be caused because the Windows XP Luna theme is missing or
messed up.

If that doesn't fix the problem, open System Properties.
Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Under Performance, Settings button | Visual Effects tab
Select Use Visual Styles On Windows And Buttons | Apply | OK
-----

Make sure that you have Windows XP as a Theme choice.

Right Click My Computer| Properties | Advanced tab | Performance | Settings
button | Visual Effects tab | Select: Use visual styles on Windows and
buttons | Apply | Apply | OK

If you select a visual style other than Windows Classic, that style
determines the appearance of your menus, fonts, icons, and other Window
elements. Including Windows and buttons.

If you do this:
1. Open the display properties and then the Appearance tab.
2. Change Windows and buttons to Windows XP Style.
3. The color scheme will change to allow you to select the schemes Blue,
Olive and Silver.

Those are the only choices you get.

If you change Windows and buttons to Windows Classic style, you can change
the look of individual items, you also get way more colors under Color
scheme.

The Elder Geek on Windows and Buttons...
[[In [Windows and Buttons] there are only two options. They are [Windows XP
Style] and [Windows Classic] style. If you download and install additional
[Themes] they will be listed here also, but read the next warning regarding
how they are effected by the [Advanced] button.

The [Advanced] button (Fig. UI-50) may be accessed without regard to the
[Windows and Buttons], [Color Scheme], and [Font Size] settings.
Additionally, you can make changes, but heed the warning "If you select a
windows and button setting other than Windows Classic, it will override the
following settings, except in some older programs." To ensure the changes
you make will be visible, select [Windows Classic Style] from the [Windows
and Buttons] drop down.]]
