cisvc .exe is using 70% CPU

My cisvc.exe in the process tree of the task manager is using 70% CPU when
the system is idle, it ramps down to 0% when other programs need the CPU.
I've never seen this before I've had this computer for about 3 years now,
the light on the front of the computer is constantly blinking and the hard
drive seems to be working too, is this normal? I've done some research on
the internet and this program controls resources for indexing on the
computer which is done during idle time but this has been going on for days
now! Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be going on and why?

If you are not indexing anything, there's no need for it to run, so...
1. click on start -> all programs -> administrative tools -> services
2. click on the "standard" tab
3. (sorted by Name) go down to "Indexing Service" -> double click
4. note that in the properties, it's described as "CiSvc"... (you've got the
right one)
5. change the "Startup type" to 'Disabled'
6. click on "Apply"
7. click on "Stop" (if available)

Thanks Dave,

I'm not sure if I can shut it off safely, I think it monitors another
process which does the indexing so I might have to shut both processes. I
have to find the name of the other process first.

The Indexing Service has no dependencies. It is, however, a service
intended to improve performance. On my system it is set to Manual.
