cisvc.exe consumes a lot of CUP cycles

A few days ago, my XP Professional PC (Dell 8250) began
idling at a CUP usage of 60 - 70%. Upon inspection w/
task manager, a process called cisvc.exe seemed to be the
culprit. Upon termination of this process, CUP usage
drops back to normal (zero). Unfortunately, every time I
restart the maching, cisvc.exe is running as before.
Anyone have any experience with this problem?

cisvc.exe is part of the Windows XP indexing service. For more information,
open the Help and Support Center and search for "using indexing service"
(without the quotes).

Do you mean CPU?

Hey Steve,

Its indexing the system indexing your files for fast searching. If you go
into My Computer, right click on each hard disk drive and select properties,
you probably have "Allow indexing service to index this disk for fast file
searching" ticked.

You can adjust how hard it works by

start/run
compmgmt.msc

Click on the + sign next to services and applications, right click on
indexing service and move the mouse pointer to all tasks, then select tune
performance. In the window that pops up, select customize and click the
customize button You can then move the sliders particlularly the top one,
over to the left to decrease the level of activity.
If you dont want to use indexing deselect it on each disk and stop and
disable the service in

start/run
services.msc

Scroll down to indexing service, double click on it, and set it to disabled
in the drop down menu. Stop it manually with the stop button. It then won't
start up next time you reboot.
