Cisco VPN client: cannot install on Win XP home ed

I'm having problems installing the Cisco VPN 3000 client on Windows XP home
edition. The client seems like a pretty new version; while I cannot seem to
find the precise version number anywhere (pretty infuriating), the name of
the self-extracting file containing the client is
vpnclient-win-is-4.0.3.F-k9.exe.

When the Installshield installer gets to part about installing the network
adaptor, it just sits there for minutes. So far I've killed that twice by
using the task manager.

Any suggestions?

We run vpnclient-win-msi-3.6.3.A-k9.exe (ver 3.6.3A) at work. Your
version must be 4.0.3F. Our IT guys make a big deal about uninstalling
any previous versions of VPN.

If no one else answers your question, Cisco has some pretty good help pages.

Thanks for replying to my post.

Right. For some reason I thought that wasn't on the list of versions at the
Cisco documentation page, but I was wrong.

What about the one that comes with Windows (IIRC MicroSoft has one)? Would
I need to uninstall that?

I'm skeptical of that. I've been all over their documentation, and I can't
find anything that remotely describes my problem. Nor can I find anything
on the web or USENET. One promising lead was something about stopping some
networking services, but that didn't work either.

For the record: the problem was solved by letting the installer go on as
long as it wanted. (It took no more than ... an hour. Bizarre.)
