Circular Logging on Active Directory

B

Brent Ruthel

I have a Windows 2000 Active Directory domain with two
servers. The NTDS service correctly logs its ebd log
files with no problem under Winnt\NTDS. My only issue is
that these log files are not automatically deleting
themselves when they reach the size of 10MB (I'm not sure
how it only grow to 10MB?). Rather the files stay under
the Winnt\NTDS directory & then I have to delete them
manually evey now & then which is causing me a big hassle
to ensure the servers are up & running correctly all the
time. I'm not sure where to enable, disable, change
settings for these log files number or sizes on the AD
servers??!!. The strange thing is that I have the same AD
setup on a test environment which is working correctly
where the edb files are regularly & automatically deleted
with no issues. Can any one please advise how to manage
these log files since they are growing very quick &
regularly managing them is becoming a big hassle.

Note: There was a MS article that talked about changing
registry to enable circular logging but my understanding
that this was valid for the early beta versions & that
circular logging is compulsory now. The article address
is
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000se

Your help is appreciated.

Regards,

Brent Ruthel.

There are no configurable settings for circular logging. It's supposed to be
on by default and be not-turn-offable. Try running a dcdiag /v and see if it
reports any errors as something is obviously wrong here.

Are you running Exchange 2000 as this has some registry keys for disabling
it?
