Circles around a number

Can someone please tell me how I can have bullet number points with a circle
around each number.

There are fonts that contain circled numbers (some of them in the Enclosed
Alphanumerics Unicode character subset), but these can't be used for auto
numbering because they do not occupy the number positions in the font.
