CHKDSK -vs- Speed Disk -vs- IDE Controller Card - I'm Battle Weary!

J

Jisha

I've got a strange situation going on... been going practically in circles
the entire day!

Norton's Speed disk (2004 version) runs for a while, then stops with I/O
error message ... says to run Chkdsk /r.
I run Chkdsk /r/v and see a few correction messages...

Returning to Speed disk, it runs for a while, then stops with I/O error
message... "run Chkdsk /r"...
I run Chkdsk /r/v again... and the cycle repeats...

ALSO... related or not... dunno... the System Log is littered with pages of
warnings generated solely by my IDE controller card (Maxtor Ultra ATA
100/133). Warning message is: "The driver has detected that device
\Device\Scsi\Ultra1 has old or out-of-date firmware. Reduced performance may
result."

I'm wondering
1) WHY isn't Chkdsk finding the problems before Speed Disk does? ... or ...
2) Could Speed Disk be creating the disk problems? ... or ...
3) Is the IDE Controller card causing the problem?

The IDE Controller isn't that old... and Maxtor doesn't have a firmware
update posted for this card on their website.

BTW... if I simply Defrag from the Computer Management Console, no problems
are encountered, and Speed Disk seems to run a bit longer before aborting.

I know this is vague... but perhaps your replies will help me to zero in on
further pertinent info.

TIA,
Chris

Jisha,

It appears that the drive is failing. If you look at the chkdsk results, you
will notice that the number of bad sectors on the drive is increasing (from
4kb to 8kb). I would backup the data on the drive asap before it fails.
