Open My Computer.
Right click on your hard drive.
Click on Properties.
Click on the Tools Tab.
You will Error-Checking.
That is what it is now.
When you go to run it, it won't cause files are in use. It will tell you
this and tell you that it will run the next time you reboot your computer.
Reboot and it will run and when completed will continue to boot to windows
normally.
Start > Run > Cmd > Chkdsk.exe /? for the correct syntax and
available
options.
Alternatively, double-click My Computer > right-click the desired
hard drive > Properties > Tools > Error-checking/Check Now. This will
run Chkdsk, normally on the next reboot
