chkdsk runs forever

I have XP Home and everytime I start or restart my computer windows runs chkdsk on my C drive. When it finishes the scan it shows a brief review of what it found and says "Windows will now restart". Windows restarts, and runs chkdsk again. It will run in a continuous loop unless I stop it before it starts (it gives me a 10 second window to hit any key and skip the chkdsk). This is very annoying and thus my chkdsk utility has been rendered useless its almost as if windows forgot that it ran chkdsk on the previous reboot. I also have a feeling that windows doesnt remember what happened to it before. For instance it always prompts me to put unused desktop icons into the unused folder, but it says that I never used shortcuts that I use all the time, its like it doesnt remember what happened on previous sessions... The main problem is the chkdsk though and that is what I need solved ASAP, I can deal with windows having alzheimers for a bit longer...

It may be worthwhile considering the possibility of your hard drive showing early alzheimers. It may just be about the time that it will fall down dead.

Boot up in safe mode. Run Norton DiscDoctor some something similar. Do a
complete backup, in case your harddrive fails. Reboot in standard mode.

The constant rebooting can be fixed by going into System from the Control
Panel, selecting the Advanced Tab, Clicking the :Startup and Recovery"
button, and turning off the "Automatically restart" feature. Best to leave
the other settings alone!
