Chkdsk hangs

When booting up the computer chkdsk runs but then after the counter reaches 5 secs nothing happens. and if you press a key before it reaches the 5 sec mark the screen shows that the computer recognises that you wish to skip but doesn't move past that either. So I have no way of reaching windows. No new hardware has been added in the past 4 months.
