Windows XP. After standy activated, program crashed and
error message as above show. Have no OS/2 floppy disk, no
floppy drive so I can't follow instructions on support
site. Have Windows XP disk though. How do I tackle this
error on hard drive. Cannot use defragmenter as this
error comes up stopping me analysing disk.
Please could you give help.

Start, Run, type in

chkdsk /f

Hit enter. A command prompt box will appear with this text:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Press the Y key and then restart the computer.

If the problem persists you may have bad blocks, so do the same but use

chkdsk /r

That will do a surface scan for blocks on the disk that cannot be
reliably read, attempt to move any data there might be in them elsewhere
and mark them as bad blocks.

If you keep having problems with this your disk may be failing. The
expected average life of a hard disk is a bit over three years.
