What happens if you shutdown the computer and restart it? Does the
same thing happen?

Note that running CHKDSK /F at startup can take HOURS so you may want
to leave it for some time before you try defrag again.

Good luck

I would recommend you reboot and let it do it's thing.

If you must cancel it then go to Start/Run and enter cmd, hit enter.
In the box type chkntfs /x C: hit enter, assuming it's the C: drive that's
needing the chkdsk.

Thanks Pete and the other guys. Have tried many reboots but I will now Try
the chkntfs. Many thanks

Well chkntfs did not work Pete. The system is still trying to do a chkdsk on
C when I boot but comes up with the message. Can not open volume for direct
access. That seems to leave a scheduled chkdsk f still to do which in turn is
stopping defraf running . Any more ideas guys?

Boot into the recovery console and run CHKDSK from there. It sounds like
something has the drive open for access when CHKDSK goes to run at boot.
Spyware Doctor (for example) can prevent CHKDSK from running at boot.
