CHKDSK /F /R stops at 0% when checking indexes

I have run CHKDSK C: /F /R several times, with the same result.

Verifying files runs successfully to 100%.

Verifying indexes stops at 0%. The disk light is fully on for about 15
seconds. Then it gradually slows down till it flickers every 3-4 seconds.
Eventually, I switch off and rebooot. On one occasion, I left CHKDSK running
for 2 hours, but it remained stuck on 0% for indexes.

Here is some troubleshooting information:

1) I have not used indexes for over 1 year.

2) CHKNTFS says that drive C: is dirty.

3) Before running CHKDSK, I ensure that Diskeeper, Spyware Doctor, and
Kaspersky AV are disabled at startup.

Does anyone have any advice?

Try running CHKDSK from outside of normal XP mode.

First, try safe mode (F8 during windows startup).

If safe mode does not work, then try running the recovery console from the
XP CDROM, or from the multiple-floppy set. The latter is a free download
from Microsoft, who calls it "setup disks".

If the recovery console asks for a password, try just hitting blank. If
that fails, boot into windows mode and change the following registry entry:

Start à Run à Regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

Close REGEDIT and reboot into the recovery console.

I tried Safe Mode first. But I spent 20 minutes looking at the initial list
of drivers. No GUI appeared, so I switched off and tried the recovery console.

This solved the problem.

Thanks.
