ChkDsk crashes on bootup and clean disk

everytime i bootup my laptop it runs checkdisk automaticaly.. it gets through
the first scan ok but when it gets to 34% on the second scan the computer
will freeze, meaning i have to re-start.. so for the last month ive been
simply skipping the check every bootup...The problem is the same thing
happens inside win xp when running cleanup disk....

why is it running the program and why isn't it able to complete it? without
being able to cleanup or chkdsk i cant defrag my comp either as you need to
chkdsk before defraging..

the only reason i can work out for it is the the hardisk maybe scratched or
something..

Tried it and it still crashed... it scrolled through aload of dos script
"c:\" etc.. then stopped.. the harddisk then started to think and then in
typical fashion just stopped and didn't continue so i had to turn my laptop
off and bootup the normal way again skipping chkdsk.

any ideas?
