chkdisk problem

I am receiving an error message when I boot up saying that a file is corrupt
and that i shoudl run chkdisk. when i do so, i get the message that chkdisk
needs control of ceratin files and should it run on next startup. i say yes,
but it either does not run or runs and does not clear the corrupt file.

alternatively, i can run chkdisk without asking it to "automatically fix
errors", in which case it runs but does not complete

can someone advise and thanks in advance

(if relevant the corrupt file is under mcafee/spamkiller/users.xml. This
has only recently arisen despite the fac that i don't use mcafee)

In your place I would
1. Remove all references to Mcafee from Registry and
all system-type INI files.
2. Then run CHKDISK (possibly faster in Safe Mode) until
it completes satisfactorily. Have a look at CHKDSK.LOG as well.

thanks. but how do i remove all references (without causing problems
elsewhere)
for info, mcafee doesn't appear in the list of programs if i look to uninstall
