chekdisk problem

Attempted to run chekdisk (on bootup) but it doesn't want to run.
Instead there is a message.
" Cannot open for direct access.
Windows has finished checking disk"
This occurs at each and every bootup.
Also, bootup has slowed considerably. Otherwise it is business as usual.

I had the same thing happen to me. Went tot C: drive in Windows
Explorer, right button down, selected Properties->Tools->Check Now,
selected check at next start-up, turned computer off, then on. The
chkdsk program ran as expected, no more problems. Can't explain, just
know it worked.

Thanks lu, that is how I understand it is to be done and how I did it.
The message I get is the result, at each bootup.
