Using Windows XP Home Edition

When I right click on an icon on the desktop and click
Properies, the a: drive tries to read something, but
there is no disk. Windows Installer pops up and is
trying to read C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Kodak\EasyShareSetup\CCS\. Kodak
easyshare has been removed, but still must have some
link. The message I get is The feature you are trying to
use is on a network resource that is unavailable. I am
not on a network. If I click OK, it recycles to the same
message and then I can get to the properties.

Any suggestions?

You probably have a Shell Extension "Context Menu" , "Property Sheet Handler", or "Icon Handler" gone awry. Sometimes folks end up installing software from a network share or a removable disk, and then normal operations like "right click" have to go across the network to find it.

MSDN has an entire section for developers concerning Shell Extensions, but this article is a good summary.

The freeware application below enumerates all of the shell extensions. Disable the shell extensions for any old programs you have uinstalled that still appear or any shell extensions that are not on your hard drive.

I've used shexview to explor the propertysheet extensions. I get back some! of the missing folder/directory property sheet displays when I disable ALL Propertysheet extensions. Selectively re-enabling shows me that IIS Shell Extension in the IIS W3ext Module version 6.0.2600.0(xpclient.010817-1148) in w3ext.dll, when enabled as propertysheet extension, prevents almost all folder/directory property sheets from displaying.

Disabling the context menu shell extensions have no effect on the missing property sheet display for directories.
