checkdisk stops at 73% - XP Pro

Running XP Pro. Repeatedly and consistently, checkdisk stops at 73% on the
5th stage, checking free space. Should I presume a hard drive problem? I do
have partitions; Drive E has the program files. C has the Windows files,
other stuff that won't go anywhere but C. PC had been running OK, but I
wonder if this 73% thing is a red flag saying I'd better get a new hard
drive, or can it be something else confusing the issue?

How long have you waited at 73% before getting out and rebooting? You are
running from a reboot or in recovery console right? Note: Large drives,
250/300GB it sometimes takes a couple hours in the 5th stage before it
completes.
