check updates manually fails

D

When I manually check for updates I get error "unable to
connect to internet/no internet connection found". I use
a cable ISP and I am online, but the program will not
connect and obtain any updates. Installation was
successful. I use IE SP2. WIN-XP Home edition. So far
everything else works fine.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

In most instances that I've read, this issue is transient. Is it continuous
for you? Does the error arise nearly instantaneously, rather than after
some possible time-out period?

D

Yes, this error occurs everytime and it appears
instantly..no delays. I switched to "automatic updates"
and the program can connect and download updates. I
cannot manually get updates, but I can receive updates
automatically. Can you get updates manually?

Thanks for your time.

I know that I can update two machines manually, and I know that other
machines are updating automatically. I don't believe I have demonstrated
both methods on any single machine, though.

Can you do Tools, suspected spyware report?

(i.e. does that function work for you, or does it fail instantenously like
the manual update?)

Suspected spyware report fails instantly "Unable to
connect to internet". Same results as using manual
updates.

Thanks for the response!

I don't know what the issue is--I suspect that some service needed, or some
module of the program, isn't functional, but I don't have a workaround or
fix to offer.

I was thinking of removing the program and reinstall?
What is your opinion?

I appreciate your support...thanks.

B

Bill Sanderson

That or using the update function also available via add or remove programs.
You might want to take a look at the .log files in the directory the program
is installed in--there must be an installation log, but I don't recall
seeing it--perhaps it is somewhere in temp files after the installation.

I tried both and both ways were unable to access
internet. I use a cable connection and firewalls. I
manually disabled the firewalls, but still unable to find
a internet connection. I wonder if anyone else has this
problem?

Thanks again for your suggestions.

B

Bill Sanderson

Others have definitely seen the problem, but I don't have a fix or
workaround to offer.

Are you an administrator on the machine?

D

dcmiller

Yes I am the only user.

Auto updates work fine, I have it set to inform me before
I download the updates. It worked fine with todays recent
updates. Do you think it is a bug in the program or some
incorrect settings by users?

B

Bill Sanderson

I think it is a bug of some sort. There was one post--possibly misleading,
that talked about changing a setting for Java between MS JVM and Sun.

I wouldn't put much stock in that at this point, though--I'm not sure many
users have that choice to make, and I have no confirmation about this. It
works fine for me on a variety of machines.

Thanks very much for your support..I appreciate your
feedback. Now I guess we wait for MS to fix
the "possible" bug. I will monitor this forum in case a
solution is discovered.

B

Bill Sanderson

Thanks - I may not be able to find this thread, but if I spot a sure-fire
solution to some of the longstanding issues, I'd probably post a message in
..announcements, and perhaps .general and/or .install or .networking
depending on the area of the product concerned.

HOOORAY..Bill I found the problem! Norton Internet
Security, 2005 version, blocks access to (in firewall, by
DEFAULT) MS Antispy Program. I manually unblocked it from
Norton Firewall and guess what?? Manual update works fine
now! I wanted you to know.

Thanks again.

B

Bill Sanderson

Thanks very much! I need to remember to ask about such things, of course.

Do you find any other issues with Microsoft Antispyware and NIS 2005? Are
all your real-time Agents and checkpoints marked as active?

D

dcmiller

I have been using both programs since their inception and
I have no other problems or conflicts (so far). All
agents and checkpoints are active.

Interesting that Norton 2005 blocks MS Antispy by
default...or maybe I am too suspicious.

B

Bill Sanderson

I suspect this will get fixed. When NIS 2005 was released, Microsoft
Antispyware didn't exist. I haven't been too impressed by Norton's default
choices with regards to Microsoft software, but I think they'll get this one
hammered out between them.
