check all cross-references in Word 2003 doc

Is there a way to have Word globally check all cross-references for proper
linking?

This is in a large Word 2003 document. All cross-references point to text
within the document.

Thanks.

I use ctrl+A to select all, press F9 to update all fields, then do a
case-sensitive search for "Error:".

Of course that doesn't do headers/footers or text boxes, or check that
cross-references are to the right thing, only that whatever they
reference to exists (which is the great majority of them). :)

Exactly what do you mean by "proper linking"? If you mean that some REF
fields might contain the names of bookmarks that don't exist/no longer
exist/are misspelled, then the easy way to check is to use Edit > Find to
look for the expression

Error!

which is the first word of the message the REF field will display ("Error!
Reference source not found.").

Thanks. I had forgotten about this. I found no instances of "Error".

I asked about this because I have a large document that was translated from
English to a language related to Farsi, and the translator's production
department had lots of trouble with "quality" issues, some of which extended
to maintaining the x-refs.

They just sent me what they say is a "fixed" 330-page document, with working
links, and I wanted to be sure that they did actually work, but did not want
to go through page by page, and test all 700 or so links.

Thanks again.

best,
Paul

Yes, you are right on all counts.

I tested the doc, and it looks like the translated doc does have working
x-refs, with none broken.

Thanks.

best,
Paul
