Chassis fan problem

W

WWII

I just purchased an ASUS P4G800-V board and when I have the chassis fan
connected
the system will not POST. Just hangs with power light and HD light. No
beeps, nothing. When I disconnect the chassis fan system POSTs and boots
fine. Tried second fan, same result.
?????? Anybody have any ideas? RMA time?

Thanks.

Maybe your power supply is too weak or you have some wierd fan that the
motherboard does not like.

What is your power supply size?

250?
300?
400?

How many devices are you running

Often a good video card like a Radeon 9800 can pull up to 100 watts.

Power supply is 300watts. Nothing running yet, just MB, 3.5 floppy, and HD.
Just assembled system.

Current draw from the chassis fan is ???

Power it directly from the PSU.

On-board graphics? You gotta have a graphics card in the mix to get it to
boot, on-board or add-in card.

What's the current draw of the fan? You might be exceeding the current
the board supports.

It might be a longshot, but see if you can find some good pictures of the
board online (perhaps http://www.newegg.com ) or use a voltage meter to
check polarity of the fan header, just in case it was installed backwards
during manufacture.

Are you attaching the fan's connector backwards onto the motherboard's
header pins? Are these 2-wire or 3-wire fans? If a 3-wire fan onto a
2-pin header, could be you're connecting them backwards. If a 2-wire
fan onto a 3-wire header, could be you are offset by a pin (plus that
fan will look to always be not spinning). Does the printing on the
motherboard where you are connecting the fan say "CHA" (for chassis)?
Are you connecting the chassis fan to a header on the motherboard or
inline with the power supply wiring harness?

With the fan removed so you can boot up, go into BIOS and check if there
are triggers for fan speed, especially for wherever you are connecting
the chassis fan. If that works, then see if you can also set BIOS to
let the fan rotate at a much slower speed before it triggers a shutdown.
Maybe your fans aren't spinning fast enough, especially if stealth fans.

Some boards don't start if the fan is running with too low RPM.

For a fan conneted as a system/aux fan, not the CPU fan header?

There might be a bios update that addresses this, if not now then in the
future. If there isn't a bios update, Asus might like to know of this
issue.

Fixed my problem by attaching fan directly to power supply. Fan was drawing
too much current. Tested with another low current draw fan.

Thanks to all.

Processor might be Hot.

It is tough to say. I would clear the BIOS and see what happens then.
