Charts automatically converting to pictures

I have a report with some powerpoint charts. For some reason, Microsoft word
keeps converting all my charts into images. I am then unable to manipulate
the chart, as it is no longer a chart. Does anyone know why this would be
happening, or what I can do to prevent it?

That would happen if the charts were produced in PowerPoint 2007, and you
are now working in "compatibility mode" in Word 2007 or if you are working
in Word 2003 (or earlier).
