does that matter?

I don't know, but it's a variable that can be eliminated from the conditions
to find out. With a router assigning the IP address the PC, perhaps the
address looks out-of-range to the SMTP server and thus is getting rejected.

I seriously don't think that's the case. My wild guess is mail.charter.net
server is no longer valid. Telnet would be a good way to test SMTP
connectivity. I tried it but their server kept dropping my connection as
soon as I got connected. That confirms your previous post that they only
accept a range of IPs that belong to them.

Well, Charter's support pages claims mail.charter.net is to be used both for
incoming and outgoing mail, so I'm not sure why you say that.

Generally untrue.

Actually true. As long as you are connected to Charter, that is, have a
Charter IP, you do not need to authenticate with the SMTP server. As you can
see from my addy I am connected, and have yet to need authentication for the
SMTP server. To access your POP3 mailbox, yes. I even run a utility to that
lets me access my Yahoo webmail from WLM, Outlook, Eudora, etc thru it with
no authentication.

I am having a problem with Outlook 2007. I am trying to set up my
****@charter.net account and the problem is I can RECEIVE, but I cannot
SEND.

I have called Charter and all my settings are correct on their end. What
could be the problem?

Just on a lark here, in your account set up, click the more settings button.
Look under the advanced tab. Is the "This server requires an encrypted
connection (SSL) box checked. If so, uncheck it, and make sure the port is
set to 25. It's a long shot, but worth a try.

ALSO...

You said you are running Vista. Is that a new machine, upgrade, or something
like that? Or just an upgrade to outlook 2007? If I remember correctly, the
Windows Firewall is enabled by default. That is under Control panel. You
might check to see if it is activated, and if so, disable it since you said
you were running the McAffee stuff. THEN try to send.
