Character Count with spaces

I am trying to keep this posted on my document as I type. How? I have to
close it before I can type again.
 
When you select Word Count from the Tools menu - assuming you aren't in Word
2007 - click the Show Toolbar button, then close the dialog box. The toolbar
will remain on screen as you work.
