chapter number in TOC

We are working on W97. I need to get the chapter number to appear in the TOC.
I learned from a separate post that Stefan replied to that you need to use
Word's built-in headings 1-9 for that to occur. Unfortunately, we use unique
styles for headings that I cannot change out.

I am wondering if there is any other way, perhaps with a field inserted,
that would allow the chapter number to be included in the TOC by the page #.
I read with interest Suzanne Barnhill's Useful StyleRef tricks in the FAQs.
But, this seems to be dealing with text from styles getting pulled into the
TOC, not an automatically generated #. Also, I face the issue of having that
chapter number appear and an em dash after the dot leaders we use in our TOCs
but in front of the page number.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The chapter number can be included as part of the chapter title if it's the
paragraph number of the title in the document; or you can add numbering to
the TOC style. If you want the chapter number to be added to the page
number, however (as you apparently do), then you do have to use one of the
built-in heading styles, and I'm afraid there's no easy way around that.

Yes, you can change your TOC so that it uses the styles that you used in
your document in your Table of Contents. I don't have Word 97 around, so
please bear with me. These instructions are based on Word 2000, which
should be similar, but not quite named the same.

When you go to the Insert menu, and select Index and Tables, and then
click on the Index and Tables tab, click on the Options button. The
Table of Contents Options is where you will clear the 1, 2, 3 from the
Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 styles. You will need to place 1, 2,
and 3 next to the styles that you used as your styles which should be
included in the Table of Contents.

You should now be able to click OK out of the dialog boxes and have your
Table of Contents appear.

Okay. Say your chapter title is something like this:

1. Title of the first chapter

By default, the chapter number will be included in the TOC entry
automatically (whether it's an auto number or typed as part of the heading).

If the title doesn't include a number, but you want the TOC entry numbered,
you can add numbering to the TOC style as described at
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/TOCTips.htm#UnnumberedHeadings.

But I don't think that either of these is what you want. If you want the
page numbers in the TOC to be 1-1, 2-1, etc. (that is, for the page numbers
to include the chapter number), then the only way to achieve this is to
include the chapter number in the page number displayed on the pages, and
the only way to do that is to use the "Include chapter number" feature in
Format Page Number, which does require that you use the built-in heading
styles (see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm).

Thanks for taking an interest. I am already doing this procedure you
describe. It's the only way to get the TOC to populate since I have no Word
built-in headings defined in all these documents.

Suzanne's response above did clarify for me though that the page numbers
WITH chapter number (1-1, 2-1, 3-1, etc.) in the TOC is not doable for me
unless I change all the styles in all these docs to use Words standard
builtin. For me, it is not an option to deviate from these styles so I'm sort
of stuck.

You know, you can set Word's built-in Heading styles to look like
anything you want. You can define them to be identical to what your
company uses. The deviation will only be in the name of the style.

In addition, you can easily switch from one style to another by using
Find and Replace.

yes...I am aware of this. My dilemma is these uniquely named styles are also
built into macros that I did not develop or design. I do not have the skill
to make change in Visual Basic; it also raises other operational challenges.
But, in the end, I may need to exercise this option.
