I have been trying for days now to located where in the registry of Windows
XP (and in win2k) where the workgroup assignment is located. MSDN, Google,
and now these newsgroups have turned up nothing.

Perhaps there is a way to do so? We have 700 machines on this network and
time to time users take their laptops home, travel, hotels what not. Upon
returning they have modified their workgroup for whatever reason and at times
it creates problems and monitoring problems for our network.

I am wanting a way to find where the workgroup is defined in the registry so
that we can write a file of some sort that is server side that will scan the
PC's upon connecting to the intranet here, and will force the change of the
workgroup.

If you ever need to know what registry entries are involved in any setting like
"workgroup", Regmon (free) from SysInternals should help you quite well.
