changing underlined words to italics

How do I change underlined words to italicized words
throughout a long document?

When I use find and replace and put (using format/font
menus) underline [ a line] in the 'find what ' box, then
put font: italic in the replace box, Word 2002 just gives
me words that are both underlined and italicized?

When I run underline in the find what box, and nothing in
replace, it deletes not only the underlining but also the
words?

thanks, JF

1. Leave both the "Find what" and the "Replace with" boxes empty.

2. In the "Find what" box, press Ctrl+U once. You will see Format:
Underline.

3. In the "Replace with" box, press Ctrl+U twice. You will see Format: No
underline.

4. Press Ctrl+I. You will see Format: Font: Italic, no underline.

Replace All.

Note that this will do a rough job, but it will not be entirely correct
because, while underline formatting is not applied to terminal punctuation,
commas and periods after italicized text should be italicized (other
punctuation is italicized or roman depending on whether or not it belongs to
the italicized text).
