I have a user who wants to use her laptop on our network.
I can't change from workgroup to Domain. I do a ipconfig, it has all the
correct ip addresses, gateway, dns. I cant ping the server, cant get out on
the internet.
Even using a wirelss connection, I still can't see the network or the
internet.
When I look at the internet connection, the numbers are very low, send 236,
receive 13.
any assistance would be helpful.

Any third party firewall software?
What about in safe mode w/networking?
Event log errors?

Re changing to a domain, what's the operating system?

sorry meant to include it's Windows XP PRo, no 3rd party firewall. MS
firewall is off. I didnt see any errors in event viewer. I didnt try it in
safe mode.

If you cannot ping the server, there is a LAN problem which has nothing to do
with domain membership. You need to resolve this first. The problem may be in
the TCP/IP settings, or it may be that the TCP/IP stack has become damaged,
possibly by faulty antivirus software or malware. LSPFix is handy for
checking this last.

Favourite culprits for IP stack damage are Norton, or Google Desktop.

Finally I would add that joining a laptop to a domain is only advisable if
that laptop is to become company property, and a permanent domainmember.
Otherwise, just map drives to the network shares. Much simpler, and avoids
the user losing all of her settings.

Try it & report back. There has to be something in your event logs....also
make sure your ipconfig /all shows *only* the internal DNS server IP (no
public IPs).
