I thought I know how to do this, but I seem to be missing something...

- Created new format/ template I wanted it and saved it in
C:\Documents and Settings\"my user name here"\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
- in that folder I renamed the "Normal" file (to get it out of the way),
then renamed my template as "Normal"

This used to work, but it seems that now Windows recreates the Normal
template into the folder again and I cannot over-ride it.

Any ideas gratefully received...

Open Word and go to Tools/Options/File Locations. Click on User Templates,
then Modify and put in the path and file name of the template you want to
use. If you are using work groups, do the same under Workgroup Templates.
Close and restart Word and your template should be in play.

actually, I think its better to leave
"normal" as is and to make a
new template with your preferred
formatting

then call it whatever you want, except
normal and save it in the templates
folder.

then your custom template will
appear when you select the file
open command.

This is not anything that concerns XP. This is a Office Word issue. Best to repost
this to the public.word.general
