Changing the product key

I see this question has been asked many times before installing SP1. I have a
situation so I am here. Windows XP Service Pack 2.

We have a computer which seem to be installed with illegal Windows xp SP2
product key ( Microsoft validation fails. maybe a leaked OEM key too). We
have volume license key and need help in changing to it. I read posts which
says product key can be changed only for volume license.

We have plenty of configurations made to system and would like to try any
other option before a clean install. How do we identify and change the key ?
Will a repair install do the trick ?
Any other options ?

That's correct.

Yes. Performing a repair installation with the legitimate installation
CD will allow you to enter the legitimate Product Key, and preserve most
of the settings and applications. Any subsequent service packs and/or
hotfixes will need to be reinstalled, though.
