Changing the border of one cell s/n change the border of adjacent cell

This is not possible, given that the two cells share a common border. The
only way around it is to insert a column in between the two and make it paper
thin ( 0.36)

I agree. I think that each cell should have its own border, ant that they
should be drawn right next to each other.
