Changing symbols back to letters/words

I was scrolling my doc. using the up/down arrow keys when
some of my doc. changed to symbols.Is there anyway to
change the symbols back to letters?

It sounds as if you somehow got the Font sectoin of the Formatting toolbar selected and accidentally arrowed yourself into using a symbol font. Check the font and see if that's it. If so, you just change the font back by highlight the portion of the document that was changed and selecting the correct font on the formatting toolbar or reapply the style you were using.
