Changing Styles in Word 2007

I want to change the styles in word 2007.

I would like to have 5 or 6 syles that I most often use in the new style
place in the ribbon. I have tried creating new styles and adding them and
removing the ones I don't use. I have tried changing the ones there. Every
time I click the box that says to make them availabe for all new documents.
But whne I close and reopen word 2007 it always reverts back.

Secondly I also want to assign keystrokes. When I try to add for example
ALT+T to the Title Heading, it gives me an error that says word cannot change
the function of the specific key.

For your styles, did you also make sure the "Add to Quick Style List"
was selected? Also, it could be your changes are getting discarded
when you exit Word. If you have the Adobe PDFMaker add-in then that
will cause this behavior. Check in the Word Options and in the Add-ins
section see if the Adobe add-in is listed. If so then the add-in isn't
compatible with Word 2007. The only part that works is discarding
changes to your Normal.dot(m) when you exit Word.

Regarding your keyboard shortcut, I believe most of the Alt
combinations are either assigned to KeyTips (press the Alt key to see
them on the ribbon) or to the old Office 2003 UI navigation. For
example, Alt+T, O will open the Word Options dialog box.
(Tools/Options) and they can not be reassigned. FWIW, most programs do
not allow the Alt key to be used for keyboard shortcuts for similar
reasons.

Thanks Beth. I do have Adobe installed but I don't really use it except as a
printer so I can disable it.

As for the keystrokes, I used the ALT keys in word 2003. But right now its
not installed. And when I tried using CTRL keys it said the same thing.
Regardless of what I pick it gives me the error message.

The old Word 2003 UI navigation is available in Word 2007 - you don't
need Word 2003 installed to utilize the keys. Actually, now that I
take another look it does appear you can assign keyboard shortcuts
using the Alt key. Strange, the last time I checked I couldn't....

Are you still encountering the issue after removing the Adobe add-in?

I was finally able to get the styles changed permanently after removing Adobe
Add-in as you described.

I still could not change the key assignment inthe styles dialogue. But I
was changing some of the buttons on the quick access toolbar and saw the
button to customize the keyboard and found how to change keystrokes for
styles there and it worked. This seems to be a bug. If you can change it in
one place but not the other, that is an inconsistency that should not exist
since you'd figure you could do it in the style box and in the keyboard
customizations place as well.

When I right click on a style either in the ribbon or in theStyles dialogue
box you get from clicking the little button on the ribbon under Change
Styles, which has the list of styles. If you right click you get an option
to Modify. In there the Format drop down at the bottom left has an option
for Shortcut Key...

It is in there that it won't change it. But if you go to options and
customize the keyboard you can. And the new shortcut key now shows up in the
Shortcut Key box inthe Format Drop Down.

As soon as I posted my last reply I remembered there is a Shortcut key
command in the Modify Style dialog. (I'm not a big keyboard user.
;-) ) I can confirm I get the same results if I use this method.
