changing start menu

I would like to change the e-mail shortcut in the start menu, but when I try
by going to properties, menu start, change, e-mail, I can only choose Outlook
Express, MSN, Windows Live MAil, bur NOT the e-mail program I have installed.
How can I add this program to the list so the right icon will appear in the
start menu? I know it is possible, but I can't figure it out.

To add any program to Start | Programs, put a shortcut to it in the folder

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I believe Ken Misunderstood you and you are wanting to change your default
email reader located not in the all programs but in the top left of the start
menu. To do so follow this link and look to the bottom of the page for the
"Specifying Older Mail Programs" section.

Changing the default email client for internet explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154359

This will register it with both internet explorer and windows and you will
be able to select it within the properties section. Good Luck,

In retrospect, you're probably right. Sorry, JoJo.

Have you tried making this unnamed email program the default
email client through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs ->
Set Program Access and Defaults -> Custom?

If that doesn't work and since you didn't mention which email
program you're using, the best I can do is give you this
workaround;

First, you need to find the executable which launches your
email program. It's probably located in the C:\Program
Files\"Name of mystery email program" folder. Right click on
the icon which launches your email program and select "Pin to
Start Menu" from the menu. You should now see this program
listed in the left hand column of your Start Menu. You can
right click on this new shortcut and rename it whatever you
want.

If you want to remove the default Email shortcut from the Start
Menu, do the following:
Right click an open spot on your Taskbar at the bottom of the
screen and select Properties from the menu.
In Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, click on the Start Menu
tab.
Hit the Customize button.
In Customize Start Menu, remove the check mark in the box next
to Email.
Click OK twice.

Good luck

Here's another thought.. Open Internet Properties, Programs tab. If the
E-mail pane includes your program and you select it here, that should
change the program listed in the Start Menu. If not, a registry change
is probably needed, as mentioned in the article.

Start Menu > Settings > Taskbar and Start Menu > Start Menu tab >
Customize button > Advanced
Double-click the Programs folder, choose a subdirectory, pull down the
File menu, choose New, choose shortcut and make a new shortcut.

I've followed your advise, and done the things written in KB154359. However,
this does'nt work. I added PegasusMail in the registry
(HKLM\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\), added the appropriate command line, but no
PegasusMail will show up in the properties section, neither in XP SP2 nor in
IE 7. A few years ago (on an other machine) it got added automatically and
was easily to make default, but then I had XP Pro (no SP's) and IE 6, as well
as an earlier version of Pegasus Mail. Still curious if there will be an
answer to get this right. Thanks for your help so far.

Friends,

I'm so embarrased! 5 Minutes after I wrote the former message, I got the
problem solved! It appeared that I didn't add a value to the new registry key
(the article didn't say so). Once I added the value 'Pegasus Mail' to the
key, I was able to choose it in the properties section, and now it works fine!
Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
