I'm sharing a hard drive and rather than have its share name be D or
whatever, I'd like to have its share name be something more like...
BigHardDrive, or something. When in the Sharing tab of the hard drives
properties thing there's a text area called "share name" but I can't
change the text within it.

Is my only recourse going to be to just create a new directory on the
hard drive with the name that I want?

You have to "unshare" it, then share it again under the
preferred name.

You can also do it the way administrators do it:
- Click Start / Run / cmd {OK}
- Type this command:
net share BigHardDrive=D:\ {enter} or
net share BigHardDrive=D:\SomeFolder {enter}
