I'm told it's possible to change the default search used in IE6
(WindowsXP home) from MSN to Google. Anyone of you clever people know if
this is possible and if so how?

Cheers.

Click on the Search icon, when the box on the left side of the screen opens
click on custom, then customize and then at the bottom of the screen click
autosearch settings and pick google. Now you can just type a word into the
address bar and hit enter and it will open a google search of that word.

The only choices it gives me is MSN or Lycos, no Google. I recall
reading somewhere that Google is an option for XP sold in the USA
whereas on UK versions it's MSN.co.uk or Lycos. However, I do recall
there being some work-around/hack to get Google.

Install the Google toolbar.

You can
a/ Go to google's site and they'll show you how.
http://www.google.com/options/defaults.html#default
[They seem to have hidden this page. I had to search in google to find it]

b/ In IE in Tools menu - Internet Options - General tab - Languages and what language is here is where web sites think you are. Put in US at top of list and when the Customise web server servers up the customise page it will give you the US one. Note non ms web sites that know where you are are telling from your IP address (different countries have different ranges of addresses) not this.

c/ Both Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) and the IE5 Powertoys (http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/IE/WebAccess/ie5tools.asp ignore warnings on page) allow selecting a word in a web page then searching on it.

d/ If you want the Show Related Sites (Tools menu) to use Google rather than MSN or Alexa then
Type in Start Run
notepad %windir%\web\related.htm

Change the line

//RelatedServiceURL="http://related.msn.com/related.asp?url=";

to

RelatedServiceURL="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=related:";

Go to http://www.google.com/options/index.html and towards the bottom
get 'Google Toolbar'

IE4 (incl XP SP1) and later uses Related.htm. Google toolbar may change that. Or maybe SP2 if that is what you have.
