IE6 search pane+MSN Updater problems

After installing MSNmessenger6.2, I get the "program files/MSN" window
popping up with a shortcut pointing to the MSN Home website. I've figured out
it's caused by MSN updater (or msnappau.exe). How do I configure it not to do
the above?

Also, in IE6, I want to use the search assistant instead of the typical
search interface. I had it somehow configured this way by hitting "Customize"
in the search pane in Windows Explorer, but now it's been resetted and won.t
work anymore. Please tell me how to do it again.
