changing program to open files

I want to change default program for opening files.
When I work as administrator it's no problem but
when I work as a limited permissions user the
"Change..." button is grayed out. I want the same
program for both accounts so it would be all right
if the administrator program was used by all users
but it is not.

I have a XP Pro SP3 system.

Any ideas?

Hi Anders,

A program is dependent on the rights allowed. Limit the rights, you
limit the features. If you want to allow a program to all users, under
the shortcut's Properties, Security tab, you need to give sufficient
rights to the users in order to run the program to the fullest. And
changing those rights has to be done at the Administrator level.

In my admin account I gave both explorer.exe and the
Windows Explorer Command file full permissions for
my limited access account. Explorer still sets the
"Change..." button to grayed out when I try to change
default program. The "New", "Delete" and "Advanced"
buttons are also grayed out. I did reboot but it didn't
help.

Is there some register setting I could change? And I
do not understand why anybody should object to
my changing any associations.

Neither AdAware, Spybot, Rootkit Revealer nor
Kaspersky AV can find anyting amiss.

You gave explorer full rights. So what are you trying to "change"?
Just because explorer may have admin rights, whatever you are trying to
change may not.

I am trying to change the associations for some file types, for example:
my .GIF-files are opened by Microsoft Photo Editor when
double-clicking them in Explorer.
I want Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to open them.

Right-click on any *.gif file and "Open With"

Select WP&FV and checkmark "always use".
