changing profile name

Walt Haisler

Running WinXP SP2. I changed my user account name (from
"oldname" to "newname"). When I start at the logon window,
I new see "newname" listed. So far, so good! However, the
profile name in C:\Documents and Settings still shows the
profile name of "oldname." How do I go about changing the
profile name also to "newname?"

Thanks very much,

Walter

Hi,

You can't. You can change the profile name, but you cannot under any
circumstances change the name of the profile folder. What you can do instead
is create a new account with the preferred name, then copy the old profile
into it. You will find the necessary steps in this article:

How to Copy User Data to a New User Profile

Create a *new user* to match the new user name you modified, copy the data
from the old user name and then delete the old user.

You don't. It works off the Security ID for the account (SID) not the name of the account
(string of chars.). Since the string of chars. have changed, not the SID, it will use the
old profile. However you can play a trick on the OS.

Lets assume the account was "oldname", the profile is...
"C:\Documents and Settings\oldname\"

Login as Administrator then rename the profile such as...
"C:\Documents and Settings\oldname.BAK\"

Now logon as "newname". A new profile will be created called...
"C:\Documents and Settings\newname\"

Again, login as Administrator then....
copy the contents of...
"C:\Documents and Settings\oldname.BAK\"
into
"C:\Documents and Settings\newname\"

Logoff as Administrator and logon as "newname", all your settings, etc., will be there.

When you are satisfied all is OK, delete...
"C:\Documents and Settings\oldname.BAK\"
