Changing Primary Key

I have a table in an Access 2003 database where the primary key
(CitationNumber) is of the data type “textâ€. I’d like change the Citation
Number to be auto assigned. I would like to do this without changing any
citation numbers that have already been assigned and would like the change to
only affect only future records.

I’ve searched the newsgroup to find an answer, but I’m a novice and still
came away a little confused. From what I’ve read, I think I should have used
an autonumber for the primary key and used a different field that could be
formatted for the citation number. It’s too late for that now. Can anyone
provide step by step instructions on what I should do?

Thanks.

Please disregard this question for now while I attempt to put into words what
I really want to know. Sorry, and thanks.
