Changing language on Vista (ITALIAN to ENGLISH)

Guest

During my holidays in Italy, I've purchased a good value for money notebook
with preinstalled Vista and MS Works and many other SW. All of the SW is in
Italian. Is there any possibillity to change the language to English so I'll
understand what does SW want from me?

I'd only like to change it on Vista and on MS Works. I did find the language
files on the internet, but there is no option to do it in Clock and language
settings (according to the manuals on Microsoft Home page it should be).

How and what to do?

Thanks

If your Notebook came with Windows Ultimate Edition installed you can
switch language by downloading the language pack from the listed
available Updates.
If the Laptop has Home or Home Premium or Business Edition then you
are fixed to the language you bought the product in BUT you may be
able to change some of the UI with a LIP file.
The facility to fully switch languages (MUI) is a function of Ultimate
and Enterprise Editions only.
see
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/search.aspx?=&qu=MUI
for more information on using MUI and LIP files to change your
language.

On xp the mui were on CDs.

If you download a language pack on vista ultimate can you then use that
language pack on another version of vista, for example business?

is ms going to offer the MUIs for vista on dvds too for those who have no
internet connections?

The download and install is integrated into one.
Vista Business does not support/is not licensed for MUI - only
Ultimate and Enterprise so that question is moot.
As per the link I provided
http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/35a1b021-d96c-49a5-8d8f-5e9d64ab5ecc1033.mspx

How do I get additional language files?
Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.

With additional language files, you can change the display language on
your computer so that you can view wizards, dialog boxes, menus, Help
topics, and other items in Windows in a different language.

There are two types of language files:

. Windows Vista Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI).? Windows
Vista MUIs provide a translated version of most of the user interface.
MUIs require a license to be used and are only available with Windows
Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise.

. Windows Vista Language Interface Pack (LIP).? Windows Vista
LIPs provide a translated version of the most widely used areas of the
user interface. LIPs are freely available for download on the
Microsoft website, and most LIPs can be installed and used on any
edition of Windows Vista. Because not all of the user interface is
translated, LIPs require at least one parent language. The parts of
the user interface that are not translated into the LIP language are
displayed in the parent language. When you download a LIP, you are
given the parent language requirements for that language. The parent
language pack needs to be installed before the LIP can be installed.

Note MUIs and LIPs will only work on a genuine copy of Windows
Vista

is ms going to offer the MUIs for vista on dvds too for those who
have no internet connections?

I would not be surprised if this did not happen soon.

Note that even when you can change the language of VISTA itself this
will not change the language of any applications that came with the
machine unless they also are prepared for the multilingual facility
that VISTA has in the Ultimate edition.
