changing insert page number from bottom to top

Hi,
I always want to number my pages on the top right, but when I click on insert page numbers it's always on "bottom of page". As a Univ. teacher and doctoral student, I do a lot of writing, and although this is a very small extra step, it's beginning to get annoying. Is there anyway to permanently change so that it will always be "top of page"?
