Every time I apply a new theme to my desktop my recycle bin reverts back to looking like the classic recycle bin. I think I may have deleted something?
Any idea how to fix this problem?

Hi Chris,

See if this helps:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Clsid

Right click the folder icon and select Permissions/Advanced/Add/System.
Put a check in the Deny column for the Set Value permission.
Ok your way out.

I believe David is correct in that it is current user, not classes root. Even at that, I'm still at a loss for what to do? I believe this problem happened after I used Norton Clean Sweep. Each time I apply a new theme to my desktop the recycle bin reverts back to the classic style recycle bin when I right click on the desktop and refresh the screen or when I reboot the system. I tried system restore - that did nothing. I tried using my Win XP disk to install the upgrades in the hopes of copying windows over windows and repairing the error - that didn't work. I think I purged a protected file that was somehow linked to themes? I really don't want to format my drive - please help.

The things the others are talking about is NVidia drivers that change the name of My Comp, Recycle Bin, et al back to the default on every boot. This doesn't sound like your issue.

Can you detail the steps to change that you go through in detail saying what each option is. Also post a picture of the before/after recycle bin.

You do this by pressing Print Screen key. Opening Paint, pasting there, use the Box selection and cut the recycle bin from the image and paste that into a new paint document. It should be a very small file (if it's not it will be rejected). You also need to access these groups correctly to attach files.

The post will be a few thousand posts old.

These are Keith's notes, David. As I have never had a system to do this, I
haven't nor couldn't test it. Will drop him a note and when the occasion
arises, try it myself. :o)

Kieth and Kelly,

Surely you mean current user not classes root.

That's an edited version of a reply from 4/20/04 where I mistyped:

-----------------------snip------------------------------------

The fix is:

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Navigate to:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Clsid"
(HKCU = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT)

Right-click the folder icon for this key & select 'Permissions'

Click 'Advanced' -> click 'Add' -> type "System" -> click 'OK'

Put a check in the 'Deny' column for the 'Set Value' permission.

'OK' your way out.

-----------------------------end snip----------------------------

My later replies have been:

------------------------------snip---------------------------

The fix is:

Start -> Run -> Regedit

Navigate to:
"HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Clsid"
(HKCU = HKEY_CLASSES_CURRENT_USER)

Right-click the folder icon for this key & select 'Permissions'

Click 'Advanced' -> click 'Add' -> type "System" -> click 'OK'

Put a check in the 'Deny' column for the 'Set Value' permission.

'OK' your way out.

Sorry for any confusion :)

You two are staying back after school because you both seem obsessed with Rooting.

I was probably rooting around for a cigarette when I typed that :)

I tried Keith Miller's navigation way on Windows 8, but it's a little different. Anyone know how to fix the same problem in Windows 8. My Outlook Iconstays changed on desktop, but then when I open outlook, the icon on the taskbar reverts back to the default.?

It's unlikely that a fix from 2004 XP will work 9 years
later on a totally different operating system.
