After reinstalling XP the letter assigned to my hard
drive is D:, . How can I change it to C:, most
applications automatically install to C:.

You can not change the letter designation of the partition that Windows XP
is installed upon. You must be certain that the correct partition is chosen
during the install. If it can't seem to be directed to C:, you have
drive/partition issues, even before installing. For example, a Zip drive
will "always" hijack the C: designation for itself.
