changing font sizes without changing cell sizes

i have a large spreadsheet on which i need to font sizes smaller. the text is too large and runs across cells. when i select all and decrease the font size for the worksheet, everything gets smaller, including the row height. i would like to change the font size without changing the cell size. is this possible?

I just tried it in Excel 2000. Cell height & width did NOT change. What
version of Excel are you using?

Strange - I used the toolbar buttons, too. I guess MS changed their behavior
for later versions.

thanks doug - i'm using 2003. i was using the font increase/decrease

buttons on the toolbar - these caused everything to change. but if i use the
drop-down menu, only the font sizes change. my mistake, i posted too soon.
still it is odd that the font increase/decrease buttons change cell sizes as
well. problem solved, thanks for the help. i love excel!!!

I normally click on the "format" tool bar selection and

select "font" and from there click on "alignment" and
select either "shrink to fit" or "wrap text". This way
the software does the shrinking or wraping.
