changing drive letter on boot drive

I just changed my hard drive. I'm trying to get the new drive to show as
the C: drive. I originally had C: and D: drives. I changed the C: to a new
hard drive and the system changed the storage hard drive D: over to C: and
the new boot drive was assigned J: I switched the storage drive from C: to
K: but the system won't let me change the boot drive from J: to C: I know
the system will work fine using J: but I'd still like to know how to change
it to C:

The easiest way to change the boot drive from J: to C: is to start over and
install Windows on the drive that you want to be C: Disconnect all other
drives from the system before installing Windows, then reconnect your other
drives after the install.

Open regedit,

Backup your registry

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\MountedDevices

Find the key marked \DosDevices\C:, right click and rename to an unused
letter.

Find your drive letter, (J:) and right click it, rename it to \DosDevices\C:

However, in your scenario, this is unlikely to work as a LOT of other stuff
will now be referencing your J: drive. I just thought I would throw this
into the mix.

If you are not comfortable with the registry, do not try this but get an
experienced engineer to do it.

. . . plus one additional step (which the OP may not be aware of): Reboot
the machine.
