Instead of using my own name, the suppliers of my new PC have set up
XP Pro with the name 'Admin'. So my data is currently in
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents.

How can I change 'Admin' to 'Terry' please?

Hello Terry, can you create another user from the Admin account, and call it Terry. Then
from then on user your Terry account. Please leave the Admin account as is and after you use
and create your Terry account, try not to use the Admin account there after. Unless you
create your Terry account as a limited user, and need to install additional programs.

Look in Control Panel|User Accounts to do this.

Hope this help you.

Run regedit: Start > Run > Type regedit > OK. Locate the following registry
key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Now you can find the RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization keys in the
right-hand pane. Change them to whatever values you want by double clicking
the name and enter on the your name on the Value data field.

To show off the new changes, just type winver.exe into the start menu run
box to see the About Windows box:

Thanks. I did tentatively try that earlier, but unless I'm mistaken
the new user account seemed to revert to 'basic' settings (desktop
etc), i.e. losing the settings I've already made. I'll try it again
tomorrow.

Thanks, that sounded promising, but I just tried it on this (old) PC,
changing Registered Owner from 'Terry Pinnell' to 'Terry'. However,
although the change is shown as you say in Winver etc, it seems to
make no difference to those system folder paths. I still see
C:\Documents and Settings\Terry Pinnell\
not
C:\Documents and Settings\Terry\

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed without risky registry editing, even if the
associated user account has been. So, your best course of action would
be to log on using the built-in Administrator account, create a new user
account, with the username desired. You can then delete the old user
account(s).
